More WRC rallies for Cave in 2009
One of the UK’s youngest world championship rally drivers, Tom Cave, has announced he will contest more WRC rallies in 2009 as he begins the next development phase of his career.
In 2008 the 17 year-old Welshman made history when he became the youngest ever entrant on Wales Rally GB. The rally was his first at world championship level but despite his relative lack of experience he scored a class win in a Group N Ford Fiesta ST.
In the first half of this year Cave will tackle a variety of rallies from the WRC as well as other British and European series, with the aim of building up his rally knowledge.
His WRC programme kicks off with April’s Rally Portugal and follows with the Acropolis Rally and Rally Poland. He will begin his ’09 campaign at the wheel of his Group N Fiesta, but if results go well he might take a step up into a more powerful car for the second half of the year.
A decision on this, and the WRC rallies he will tackle later in the season, will be made after Rally Poland.
“This year is all about gaining as much experience as possible on as many surfaces as we can,” said Tom. “That’s part of the reason we’ve chosen some of the most famous events in the sport. There were others that I initially hoped to compete in, such as Rally Finland, Rallye San Remo and Ypres but unfortunately I can’t yet, because I must be 18 to be able to enter and I won’t be until November of this year.
“The break at the mid-point of the season will allow us to take stock and decide how to approach the second half of the season. We may stick with the Fiesta or we may look to move on, depending on what options are available to us at that point,” he added.
Up to now the majority of Cave’s rallying has been done in Latvia, where rally driving is permitted from the age of 15. Cave has driven in the Latvian National Rally Championship for the last two years and competed on a Latvian international competition licence in Wales.
