ATTENTION: Toyota Recall 1991-95 MR2/Celica Turbo -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The article is here: www.motortrend.com/features/..._Toyota_recall/ By Francis Hummer Photography by Mark Stintson Motor Trend, April 1, 2006 Aichi, Japan: Following 10 long years of litigation, Toyota Motors and the U.S. Department of Transportation have come to an agreed settlement in a long running dispute over Toyota Motor Company's failure to comply with NTHSA and EPA labelling requirements in certain vehicles produced and sold in the United States from 1991 to 1995. The dispute involved Toyota Motors use of Molybdinum, a rare metal thas been found to be carcinogenic in humans. In accordance with EPA regulations and U.S. law, all products containing carcinogenic substances must clearly be labelled as such. Toyota motors, however, failed to comply with this regulation when it designed the carnkshaft for the 3SGTE engine found in some MR2 and Celica models. Toyota had hoped to avoid a costly recall by rguing that the labelling requirement was unecessary as the crankshaft is normally hidden from view, but EPA lawyers and Judge Samuel E. Bronkowitz disagreed and ordered Toyota to replace all crankshafts with one bearing the appropriate labelling. The move is expected to cost Toyota several billion dollars, as the company has announced its intention to replace the engines in these cars rather than replacing individual crankshafts (a procedure that would almost certainly require a costy and time consuming engine rebuild). A spokesperson for Toyota announced that because of supply issues, the company would be replacing the older 3SGTEs with the most recent iteration of the engine (dubbed 4th generation by enthusiasts). Owners who bring their MR2 in for the recall will pick the car up a few days later with a new VVTI equipped engine rated at 280 HP (up from the standard 200 HP that the engines made when the vehicles were first sold in the U.S.) PS. cia siaip balandzio pirma buvo geras pokshtas |
